Single Rope Techniques

Single Rope Techniques (SRT) If you really have the bug for vertical caving, continue your training with the SRT courses. Technical competence from each member of the team is very important as this technique is more of a 'single persons' technique and the skills required must be learned under close supervision of an experienced and fully qualified caving instructor. 'Ease Gill' Cave System, Yorkshire Dales. The SRT courses are run in the following progression: SRT Level 1 (Basic) SRT Level 2 (Intermediate) SRT Level 3 (Advanced) BCA Specialist SRT Workshop SRT Level 1 (Basic) - 2 day Introduction to Single Rope Techniques It is advisable that cavers have experience of abseiling before applying for the SRT courses. This level 1 course is the first entry to Single Rope Techniques helping to develop your vertical independence and self-reliance in caves. DAY 1 The course starts with an introduction to the variety of equipment on the market and give you sound advice on care and maintenance. There is a danger of rushing out and buying equipment that may not be right for you so I must stress that you try out all the different harnesses, descenders etc. first before making your decision. I will explain in detail the equipment used and give you plenty of opportunity during the first day to try it all out thus helping you to decide a 'RIG' that suits you. A personal S.R.T. check list will be issued to help you with your equipment choice for the future. The first day takes place on the surface and is held on fixed rope circuits using the latest modern equipment. DAY 2 The second day gives you the opportunity to try out these techniques in an active, vertical pothole. The emphasis will be on technical competence rather than physical fitness so the pitches will be challenging but fairly short. During this trip I will point out what to look for at pitch heads and on traverse lines with regard to personal safety and SRT rigging. Caving suit, helmet, light set and full SRT kit is provided. The level 1 SRT caver will be at the standard to kit themselves up with a rig that is correctly fitted, complete basic SRT skills to enable them to follow an experienced SRT rigger on trips negotiating simple traverse lines, abseil and ascend single ropes on straight vertical pitches. Next Step: Practice, gain more experience and/or move onto the SRT Level 2 (Intermediate)
